The e-girl is a cultural identity more than a job title. Pink or pastel hair, cat-ear headphones, anime energy, a slightly-unhinged aesthetic that emerged from Twitch chat and Tumblr fandom around 2018 and escaped containment so successfully that "egirl" is now a fashion category at Hot Topic.
The OG e-girl is Belle Delphine, who in 2019 sold a 30-jar run of her actual used bathwater for $30 each to a clientele she called "thirsty gamer boys." It sold out in under an hour. The bathwater is, at this point, a museum artifact of how internet attention economies actually work.
The contemporary e-girl runs a more polished operation — kawaii branding, TikTok funnel, OnlyFans link in bio. The aesthetic is so legible there are TikTok tutorials on "becoming an e-girl in 10 minutes."
